NPR Weekend Edition – This memory cafe in northeast Pennsylvania is one of more than 600 across the country. These gatherings for people with cognitive impairment and their caregivers are relatively cheap and easy to run — often the only expense is a small rental fee for the space.
SUSSEX, Wis. – Libraries in Waukesha and Jefferson Counties offer “memory cafés” and this year, the group welcomed more people than ever.
Linda Bedford loves Christmas, but two years ago, her memories of the holidays started to fade.
“Sometimes you feel defeated. Sometimes you feel like, what was I thinking about? Where did that come from?” said Bedford.
OCONOMOWOC — A diagnosis of dementia shouldn’t mean that the library has now become off-limits, said Jennie Fidler, Oconomowoc Public Library special services coordinator, who wants to make sure the library is accessible for people of all ages and abilities.
The Library Memory Project, an initiative of Bridges Library System, is a partnership between public libraries in Jefferson and Waukesha Counties in Wisconsin with a mission to provide programs to those affected by memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, and other forms of dementia.
As Lily Primeaux, library associate at the Austin (Tex.) Public Library, was setting up the system’s first Disability Dialogues Book Club meeting in April, she wasn’t sure what to expect. “We were in the small meeting room,” she recalls. “Most staff didn’t think we’d get a high turnout.”
