In January, four Waukesha County libraries joined together to form the Lake Country Libraries Memory Project. The four libraries include: Pewaukee, Hartland, Delafield and North Lake. The memory project consists of two components: memory cafes and educational opportunities. Memory cafés are social engagement opportunities for those with memory loss and their care partner. It is a time to get away from the worries of the disease and spend time with people who are going through a similar experience. The libraries started offering memory cafés in an effort to reach this special population that often become isolated but are still interested in being a part of the community. In addition to memory cafés, we offer educational programs that are open to the general public which include topics like “Maximize Your Memory” and “The 10 Signs of Dementia.”
The four collaborating libraries offer a memory café on a two month rotation and the July 10th memory café will be the first held at the Town Hall Library in North Lake. It will also celebrate the six month anniversary of offering memory cafes in the Waukesha County community. At this Picnic in the Park memory café we will share a little music, and enjoy a few fun options such as getting a picture taken with a choice of fun hats, a simple craft activity, and a chance to tour a “party ambo.” Of course, the main event will be the delicious, traditional picnic lunch.
