Do I need a library card to attend a memory café?

A library card is not required for attending a memory cafe. However, if you wish to sign up for a library card, we can assist you.

Can I come by myself to see if memory cafés will be a good fit for my loved one?

Care providers can visit a memory café to assess its suitability for their loved one. Memory cafés can be beneficial for both the care provider and the person living with memory loss. We encourage you to bring your loved one the next time you attend a memory café.

Can I bring a group to a memory café?

Memory cafés are designed for individuals living with memory loss and a family member, friend, or paid care professional to attend together. They are not suitable for group outings from a facility.

Are all the memory cafés the same?

Each memory café is unique. With 21 public libraries offering memory cafés, each one offers a different style and features a unique theme or topic each month. Each café runs for 1.5 hours.

Can I attend more than one memory café a month?

Yes, we encourage you to attend as many as your schedule allows.

What can I expect at a memory café?

Memory cafés run for 1.5 hours, comprising an opening, an activity, and a closing.

  • Opening section includes an icebreaker where attendees introduce themselves and answer a brief question.
  • Middle section features a program or activity lasting about 45 minutes. Time is allocated for attendees to chat.
  • Closing section involves announcements and may include a poem or song.

How can I help support the Library Memory Project's memory cafés?

You can support our memory cafés by spreading the word to family and friends, applying to volunteer as a memory café volunteer at your public library, or making a monetary donation to Bridges Library System.

How do I become a memory café volunteer?

Those interested in volunteering at a memory café can contact the public library where they wish to volunteer. Inquire about volunteer opportunities specific to memory cafés. Libraries often require completion of a volunteer application, which may include a background check. Member library list.
